The National Federation of the Blind launched a lawsuit against the Target website for lack of access to people with disabilities. It was due to be a landmark case in terms of the applicability of accessibility laws in the USA.
After 2 years of court wrangling Target eventually agreed to pay out a $6 million settlement and to remove the accessibility issue by February 2009.
While some are citing the fact that this is small change for a company the size of Target (which gives away around $3 miilion every week in grants and special programs) it is still significant in that the case was found in favour of the claimants. This potentially opens up the possibility of others launching similar cases in the USA and worldwide.
Target could have spent a fraction of this cost in making the site accessibile in the first place, why go through this damaging process dragging your brand through the mud?
